  14. ------------
  15. - Fixed the bug that caused crashing down while scanning on some machines :-)

  21. Overview
  22. --------
  23. HPFSTool contains a *real* Undelete for OS/2 HPFS-Drives. That means that you
  24. don't have to use the DELDIR statement in CONFIG.SYS like in other "UnDels".
  25. You are able to recover almost any file that has been deleted on any HPFS-Drive
  26. in your system.
  27.  
  28. Also you have a PM-based sector editor included which makes it possible to
  29. view and modify sectors on every harddisk or floppy drive in your system.
  30.  
  31. This program is ShareWare. You can make as many copies as you want and give
  32. them away to other interested people. You have 25 free trial executions
  33. to find out if this program fits your needs and works the way you want.

  35. If you plan to use HPFSTool regulary you must register it (More details
  36. about registration at the end of this text).

  39. Installation
  40. ------------
  41. The usage is quite simple. Copy all files to a directory on your harddisk
  42. and then start HPFSTOOL.EXE. In the startup dialog you can see the remaining
  43. trials in the entryfield 'Serial Number'. Press the buttons 'English' or
  44. 'Deutsch" to select the language for the program. When the main window
  45. shows up select 'Undelete' or 'Edit'.
  46.

  48. Undelete
  49. --------
  50. First select the drive using the 'Drive' spinbutton. Then press 'Scan' to scan
  51. that drive for deleted files. If you know the name of the file you may enter
  52. the first 15 characters in the entryfield 'File'( no wildcards like * or ? ).
  53. If you leave this field blank then all deleted files are displayed.
  54.  
  55. While scanning the 'Scan' button changes to 'Stop' so that you can abort
  56. scanning at any time you want. Because of the HPFS-structure it is necessary to
  57. scan _all_ free sectors on the drive to find deleted files so scanning can take
  58. a few minutes depending on the size of free space on the drive.
  59.  
  60. Select the file you want to recover from the list and press 'Undelete' or
  61. doubleclick on the file to recover it. When selecting a new path for the
  62. recovered file keep in mind that you should not store the file to the same drive
  63. if you plan to recover more then one file. This is because the first recovered
  64. file may overwrite some parts of the other deleted files that you also want
  65. to recover.

  67. If you get the message "Unable to lock drive X:" that means that the program
  68. can't get exclusive access to that drive. This occures if at least one other
  69. file is currently open on this drive. Therefore it is impossible to lock
  70. the boot-drive and the drive with the SWAPPER.DAT on. You may proceed with
  71. Undelete but make sure that no other process acesses this drive and no
  72. paging occures while Undelete is in progress.
  73.  
  74. The 'Wipe' button removes all information about the deleted file so that
  75. it can never be recoverd. This may be used for security reasons or to
  76. clean up some *.###, *.$$$ files.
  77.  
  78. Deleted files are only listed if they could be completely recovered, that means
  79. no partial recovering is possible. Undelete also tries to find the path where
  80. the deleted file was located before deleting. If the path could not be found
  81. only '???' is shown.

  83. HPFSTool disables "Lazy writes" on HPFS drives because it accesses the disk
  84. directly without notifying the file system driver and it's cache management !
  85. To turn on Lazy writes after using HPFSTool enter 'DETACH CACHE /LAZY:ON' on
  86. the OS/2 command prompt. (Note the DETACH statement !)
  87.  
  88. Before using the Undelete function check the following things:
  89.  
  90. - Stop any other program that may access the drive and avoid paging
  91.   if the SWAPPER.DAT is on that drive.
  92.  
  93. - If necessary call CHKDSK to check the drive for errors.
  94.  
  95. - After deleting a file that you want to recover avoid writing to the
  96.   drive wich the deleted file was on.

  99. Sector editor
  100. -------------
  101. Select a drive using the 'Drive' spinbutton and select a sector via the
  102. 'Sector' spinbutton. If you want to edit a floppy disk you have to insert
  103. the disk before you run the sector editor. You can change the display format
  104. of the sector to 'Data'(Hex-mode), 'Boot'(Boot-sector mode) or 'FNode' (file
  105. information block which contains information about a file on HPFS drives) by
  106. using the 'Format' spinbutton.
  107.  
  108. Press the 'Copy' button to copy the contents of the display to the clipboard.
  109. If you want to change the contents of the sector activate the edit field via
  110. TAB-key or mouse and enter the new values. Pressing the 'Clear' button fills
  111. the whole sector with 0. To write the modified sector back to disk press
  112. the 'Write' button.
